“14°48′ and 17°12′ lat. N, around Boa Vista island
“14°48′ and 17°12′ lat. N, around Boa Vista island” is part of my project on the inhabitants of Boa Vista, the easternmost island of the Cape Verde archipelago located off the coast of Senegal. Morabeza, in the Creole language, means the attachment to one's roots, to one's land; it is not just nostalgia (saudade in Portuguese or sodade in Creole) related to family, friends, and the land of one's birth, but it is something more: the feeling of happiness, peculiar to Cape Verde, that one feels when thinking about one's world. What is the real Boa Vista? The intent of my project is to move away from a tourist vision of the island, which is often predominant in the eyes of those who visit this territory, to a more human and therefore more authentic vision of the place, composed above all of people with their joys but also with their daily challenges. Boa Vista is an island as fascinating as it is, in some respects, difficult to experience. However, in the faces of most Cape Verdeans one can see their great strength and their ability to adapt while enjoying, in simplicity, the little things in life.
